Jacob’s grandfather Abraham had set out on a long journey; now Ya’akov makes his way through the wilderness alone. There, the similarity ends. Avraham traveled with the assurance that ADONAI was with him and was guiding him. Jacob had no such assurance as he started out. But Jacob does meet God at Bethel, and is assured of His continuing love and protection.⁴⁴⁸
